No Ireland
Performed by Siobhán Ní Mháille
Verse 1
I walk the fields where my fathers stood,
Through towns and valleys, past the old neighborhood.
Once proud and bold, we held fast to our name,
But now I wonder, will it vanish just the same?
They say the future’s bright, they say this change is good,
But they’re clearing away everything we understood.
Traditions fall like leaves to the ground,
And the Ireland we knew can’t be found.
Chorus
I never thought I’d hear this in Ireland:
“No old ideas,” “No old culture,”
“No old customs,” “No old habits.”
They want us a minority by 2040’s hand,
And our grandchildren won’t call this place Ireland.
Verse 2
In the pubs and halls, the songs fade out,
The tales of our people left in doubt.
The shamrock and harp, the Gaelic tongue,
All losing ground to a world undone.
They call it progress, this brand-new day,
But what’s the cost of giving it away?
When history’s sold for immigrants unknown,
What will be left to call our own?
Chorus
I never thought I’d hear this in Ireland:
“No old ideas,” “No old culture,”
“No old customs,” “No old habits.”
They want us a minority by 2040’s hand,
And our grandchildren won’t call this place Ireland.
Bridge
They tell us the past is a burden to bear,
But our roots are deep, and our spirit’s rare.
From the hills to the shores, this land’s in our blood,
Yet they trade it away like it’s nothing but mud.
Verse 3
So here’s to the land that we hold dear,
To the songs, the pride, the Irish cheer.
They can strip the symbols, rewrite the tale,
But the heart of Ireland won’t go stale.
Chorus
I never thought I’d hear this in Ireland:
“No old ideas,” “No old culture,”
“No old customs,” “No old habits.”
They want us a minority by 2040’s hand,
And our grandchildren won’t call this place Ireland.
Outro
But as long as we’re here, as long as we stand,
We’ll keep the fire burning in this ancient land.
For the land of the Gaels, where our stories are spun,
Our Ireland won’t fade, we’ll carry it on.
