On waking up and deciding the morning itself is justification enough

Enough Reason

A bird don’t hold a meeting before it starts to sing,
don’t file a form or prove its worth or justify the thing.
It wakes up and the morning’s there and that is all it needs —
the song comes out because the day arrived and the throat concedes.

I’ve spent a lot of mornings looking for a better reason,
waiting for conditions right enough for my particular season
of output, of effort, of showing what I’ve got —
and the bird outside sang seventeen songs while I did not.

The right time and the perfect cause and everything in place —
those are lies we tell ourselves to justify the space
between the thing we could be doing and the thing we’ve done.
The bird don’t need a reason. Just the morning and the sun.

So wake up and decide that waking up was reason enough,
that the day extending out ahead is sufficient stuff
to justify the song, the work, the showing up again —
you don’t need to be right to begin. You just need to begin.

A bird don’t sing ’cause it’s right… it sings ’cause it woke up and decided that was enough reason.
