(Verse 1)
When the moon is high, and the stars are bright,
And the wind starts to howl on a chilly night,
There’s a rule on the farm that you better know now,
If you want things calm, don’t spook the cows.

(Chorus)
Don’t spook the cows, keep it nice and slow,
Move real easy, let your footsteps flow,
Don’t spook the cows, they’re a nervous crew,
If you startle them, they’ll stampede right through.

(Verse 2)
Old Bessie’s chewing on her evening hay,
She don’t need no ghosts in her barn today,
So keep those rattles and chains at bay,
If you want the milk, then hear me say:

(Chorus)
Don’t spook the cows, keep it nice and slow,
Move real easy, let your footsteps flow,
Don’t spook the cows, they’re a nervous crew,
If you startle them, they’ll stampede right through.

(Bridge)
No sudden screams, no shadowy games,
No ghostly whispers callin’ their names,
Just tiptoe around, with a gentle breeze,
And the cows will graze, with perfect ease.

(Verse 3)
So when you’re out in the fields at night,
And the coyotes howl under pale moonlight,
Remember this tune and you’ll do just fine,
Keep the peace, and the herd will stay in line.

(Chorus)
Don’t spook the cows, keep it nice and slow,
Move real easy, let your footsteps flow,
Don’t spook the cows, they’re a nervous crew,
If you startle them, they’ll stampede right through.

(Outro)
So, don’t spook the cows, let the night be still,
Keep the barnyard quiet, and they’ll be chill,
Don’t spook the cows, that’s the farmer’s creed,
A calm herd’s a happy one, that’s all you need.

“Don’t Spook the Cows”

By Alan Nafzger (1992)

When the moon rides high and the stars shine bright,
And the wind picks up on a cool, dark night,
There’s one rule out here, if you don’t wanna row—
You best be sure you don’t spook the cows.

Old Bessie’s chewin’ her evening hay,
She don’t need no trouble comin’ her way,
A sudden noise or a shadowy creep,
And you’ll see that herd jump right from their sleep.

Don’t spook the cows, keep it nice and slow,
Move like the breeze where the soft winds blow.
Don’t spook the cows, they’re a jumpy bunch,
Startle ‘em once, and you’re out to lunch.

The barn’s got ghosts, or so they say,
But don’t bring ‘em out, not tonight, no way.
Keep those chains from rattlin’, and shadows at bay,
Or you’ll see that herd scatter like they’ve lost their way.

They’re nervous folk, them cows, you see,
A sudden move, and they’ll break free.
No ghostly whispers or playful screams,
Just tiptoe through like you’re in their dreams.

Don’t spook the cows, keep it calm and clear,
Walk real gentle, like you’re not even here.
Don’t spook the cows, don’t let ‘em take flight,
Or you’ll be chasin’ ‘em down all night.

Now the coyotes howl, and the night’s grown cold,
But you’d better remember what you’ve been told.
Let the moonlight shine, let the stillness reign,
Or you’ll have a mess that’s hard to explain.

So if you’re out on the range when the wind does howl,
And you’re workin’ the herd ‘neath the evening cowl,
Just keep your cool, don’t rush or run,
‘Cause spooked-up cows ain’t nobody’s fun.

Don’t spook the cows, that’s the rancher’s law,
Keep it quiet, without a flaw.
Don’t spook the cows, or they’ll scatter like rain,
And you’ll be out there, feelin’ the pain.

So, listen close, don’t act the fool,
Out here on the farm, that’s the golden rule.
Keep the peace, and the herd’ll stay sound,
But spook the cows, and you’re goin’ down.
