On the pride that keeps a man from asking what he desperately needs to know

Sign the Paperwork

A man who won’t ask questions got a look about him — proud,
chin up, eyes forward, nodding in a room that’s gone too loud
for him to follow what is being said but won’t admit
that he lost the thread somewhere around page one of it.

He’ll sign that paperwork with a confidence that kills,
the kind of signature that over time produces bills
he didn’t see coming because he didn’t ask the question plain
that would’ve saved him three bad years of self-inflicted pain.

There ain’t a foolish question when the ink’s about to dry,
there’s only foolish silence and a man too proud to try
the simple act of saying: now what does this part mean?
The answer might embarrass him but less than what will come unseen.

Ask the dumb question, read the line, slow down before you sign —
wisdom ain’t in knowing, it’s in knowing where the line
is between what you understand and what you’re about to own.
The man who won’t ask questions signs away things he should’ve known.

A man who won’t ask questions ain’t wise… he’s just about to sign paperwork he don’t understand.

I’m Alan Nafzger. Appreciate ya!
