On the difference between complaining about darkness and doing something about it

Flip the Breaker

Cussin’ the dark is a satisfying thing to do,
it feels productive and it don’t cost nothing but your mood.
You can really lay into it — the dark don’t talk back none —
but when you’re done the room’s still black and nothing has been done.

I’ve met men who could cuss a problem elegant and long,
who had the vocabulary and the passion and the song,
but the breaker’s down the hallway and it don’t trip itself,
and all that fine cussin’ just sits there on the shelf.

Either fix the light or learn to sit with your own mind,
because the dark don’t take it personal and won’t be left behind.
Silence in the dark is honest in a way the noise ain’t been —
you find out what you’re made of when you can’t see what you’ve been.

So pick your path — the breaker or the quiet of the room —
but quit the middle option of just cussin’ at the gloom.
The dark don’t flip itself for anybody’s righteous spite,
and a man who won’t do either is just angry in the night.

Cussin’ the dark don’t flip the breaker… you either fix the light or learn to sit with your own thoughts.
