Two Deals at Once

Two Deals at Once

A Cowboy Poem by Alan Nafzger

A man can chase two rabbits if he’s feeling real inspired,
but rabbits go two directions and a man gets tired.
He’ll lunge left, then lunge right, then sit down in the dirt,
with nothing in his hands but dust and a moderate amount of hurt.

A man can chase two deals if his confidence is high,
he’ll shake two hands on Tuesday underneath the same big sky.
But deals smell desperation and they talk to one another,
and by Friday both have fallen through and called the other brother.

Now he’s sitting with two contracts that dissolved in the heat,
two handshakes that meant nothing and two sets of incomplete,
and somehow — don’t ask how — he still owes money on the truck,
which has nothing to do with either deal and everything to do with luck.

Pick the one worth picking and go after it full bore,
a man who’s all the way in wins more than one who’s keeping score
on two fields at the same time while the good one slips away —
in Texas you get one deal done or you explain yourself all day.

A man can chase two deals at once if he wants… but he’ll end up losin’ both and somehow still owing money on the truck.

I’m Alan Nafzger. Appreciate ya!
